I haven’t tried to whittle this down to individual tracks, and if I did, some of these might not make the cut as each song is too much part of the album. But here are the albums I’ve listened to most recently – that is, yesterday and today – in no particular order. This would certainly not be *my list* though, as it does not contain Eleven More Months And Ten More Days, Tom Lehrer or Mozart.
Alice – Tom Waits
Black Sheep Boy – Okkervil River
Schubert piano duets – played by Sviatoslav Richter & Benjamin Britten (this is not the disc I have, but the most similar one on Spotify)
Rook – Shearwater
The Sunset Tree – The Mountain Goats
Mahler: Lieder – sung by Christian Gerhaher
J Roddy Walston & The Business – J Roddy Walston & The Business
The Chairman Dances, Tromba Lontana and Short Ride in a Fast Machine by John Adams. I also played Harmonielehre, Parts 1, 2 and 3, which are on Spotify but would add another 40 minutes to your listening and you might not quite have time for that this afternoon. My recording is played by the CBSO, conducted by Simon Rattle.
Oh, and a late addition – many of you will have seen Google’s tribute on Jim Henson’s birthday. Thanks to Jonco for directing me to this.
Nor does it include the Singing Postman, and you gotta have the Singing Postman.
I have heard of both Schubert and Mahler; indeed I have CDs of their music. The others, though, seem to have passed me by.
By the way, I’d guessed that Eric Clapton played the drums. Mr Google informs me I was wrong.
I prefer my Schubert CD to the one I’ve linked to.
The decision to learn to enjoy a wider range of music was one of my better ones. After hearing a piece three times, one starts to be able to evaluate whether it’s any good.
Eclectic Light Orchestra.
You can see a pattern though, can’t you Rog?
Having had a quick skim through your playlists, I can see several patterns actually. I really liked the Mountain Goats. I have to ration myself with Tom Waits, but I think Mrs W is the power behind, since he and his instruments stopped drinking. I could go on, but this is only a comment.
Great stuff!
I also played Get Lonely but I only put down one album per band, and this was the less depressed-sounding one. I think John Darnielle is remarkable.
Having started from a position of reasonable musical knowledge combined with almost complete ignorance of music since about 1973, I’ve enjoyed discovering a new musical taste in the last four or so years.
Five years, I’ve checked back.
And also noticed how massive that header photo is. Whoops. Wonder if I can make it smaller – otherwise, it’ll have to go. Sorry folks.
That’s better.
Love the guglet. I’m guessing it is quite small.
No actually, it’s 9 inches tall.
