Z watches someone else work

The good news of the day is that we’ve secured the services of a gardener and his first day was today.  I couldn’t believe how much he did in a few hours and feel altogether better about the wilderness that we laughingly call ‘garden.’

The less good news is that my first meeting of the day (of three) started at 8.30 this morning and the last finished just before 8 o’clock tonight.  That doesn’t suggest I was at school all day, I was home for a long time, but all the same…

My french beans are nicely grown and ready to be planted out, yet I don’t quite dare yet.  We have had frosts in the past week and I don’t want to lose them.  Yet the nighttime temperatures aren’t supposed to dip below 7 or 8 in the next few days and by then it’ll be the middle of the month, and surely we’ll be safe then?  I go through this every year and you’d think I’d have the sense to just sow the seeds a week later – but I think I did it at the time because of visits to Wink, it was convenient.

Talking os Wink, it’s this Saturday we’re meeting in London, at Tate Modern.  That’ll be jolly.

I don’t think I’d ever want to live anywhere that wasn’t in reasonably easy reach of London. Even if I don’t visit for a while, I want to know that I could!

Ooooh, give my regards to the Tate Modern. They had Mr. Hurst and Edvard Munch exhibitions there on my first visit. Loved it!

As our garden is not too big and as we’re both still pretty fit, we don’t yet need to employ a gardener. If only the spent camellia flowers would quietly combust instead of dropping onto the flowerbed in their dozens.

I’ve always loved London, since I was a child, though I don’t know about living there.

We’ve got too much land to look after – that is, we’re too busy and not sufficiently interested. Though I do like having space and I haven’t lived in a town for many years – I don’t know, it’s complicated! Not for Russell though, this was where he was born and he wants to live out his life here.

Russell is in an enviable position……….. although, this is our thirteenth home in fifty one years, and we’ve enjoyed each one of them in their own way; so I don’t know that I envy R. really.

We lived in three other houses before we moved back here nearly twenty-eight years ago. The one I really loved was the last one, an old Rectory we lived in for ten years. This will always be his home rather than mine.
